I used winDV to capture some Hi-8 tapes from a camcorder. I used firewire to facilitate the connection and ended up with some very large AVI files. Running mediainfo I get:

File size : 2.28 GiB
Duration : 10 min 53 s

I am wondering how I can read the above information and what it is telling me. It seems by bit rate is high, but the quality of the picture is still not the best. Thanks.

  • "The quality of the picture is not the best" is a bit too vague and subjective. Do you mean it's worse than the original? Have you watched the original tape on a large monitor or the small camcorder monitor? - maybe the original appears to be better than it actually is on small screens. I'm not well informed regarding those old formats but I guess this file format is not meant for consumption but for editing. After editing you would export it into a consumer format, which should be a modern codec which saves a lot of file size.
