comment How to record HDMI video output?
B&H comments for the ProRecorder are a little concerning. Asynchronous audio, won't work with Primere, easily corrupted files, short life ... I couldn't feel good about buying this, but I'm in a professional setting. The content I record represents thousands of dollars.

Looks like a fun toy. I like that it sends record data over USB, instead of it being internal.

About 5 years ago when I was looking into new equipment, I looked at Black Magic. I eventually decided against them because of the mixed reviews on Amazon. Maybe that's changed.

AVI codec pack still working and available as of this date.

That's how I was able to record with the codec in the first place. ffdshow seems to have the encoder for MP4V, but not the decoders, or at least, not any decoder Vegas Pro will use.

comment What exactly does the video rendering quality option do in Sony Vegas Pro?
It's HDV footage. I don't know why the settings are that way.

Added project settings. I've been told that before about the bitrate and use Handbrake of ffmpeg to recompress. Two things. 1) I don't really notice a quality difference, 2) This would add significant processing time to my workflow.

I've added snapshots of the render settings to the question.

Thank you. Very valuable information. Since Preview and Best differ by three of the four settings, which do you suppose was causing the issues?

@audionuma I should mention that these artifacts are consistent across all formats tried. mpeg-2, mp4, HDV, etc. I wasted a lot of time this evening realizing that it was this setting. I tried it last because "preview" implies lesser quality than "best". My question was originally "How to fix this" but tried this as a last ditch so I can say I tried everything. I was not expecting it to fix it.

comment Does the MP4 HTML5 compatible video type allow for mono audio?
Thank you. I'll give this a go and report back. A few things 1) Why is Vegas Pro not better suited for this? Is that by intentional design or a flaw? 2) Where did you get 6kbps? My understanding is that the difference between a 128kbps mono stream and a 128kbps stereo stream is that the mono stream is double the rate of any of the two stereo channels. In speech, the quality difference between 64kbps and 128kbps is remarkable, and on a one hour lecture is close to 50MB. Multiplied by thousands of lectures (which I have) that's a notable consideration.

What's a GOP? So, the program scanned the bytes of the file for specific byte sequences that tag the start and end of chunks?

If you know and understand the technicals of how this works, please consider answering my next question: What was technically wrong with this unseekable wmv?

Yes, wonderful! ASFTools was able to fix it. Steeper was not. In ASFTools I first clicked on "Make Seekable", but then it suggested clicking on "Lost Chunks". That fixed it. Not sure what that means technically speaking, but it is now seekable and I can edit the original video.

Thanks, will try in about 8 hours when I'm awake again.

comment How can I know if a video has been manipulated/staged/faked?
Unless you happen to have actually recorded it on tape that only works in a camcorder that doesn't have an input to record to tape from an external source, such as a TV or VCR.

comment How to convert HDV to dvd full resolution 640 x 480?
I put in height 480 and crop on either side at 180 and it works great. Thanks for the help. You've helped me understand anamorphic video a bit more.

I can't seem to enter a value in the vertical pixel box. Don't know why. Yes, the reason for cropping is functional/artistic. They are lectures given mostly from a podium, so there is a lot of unused space on either side which can be better used in the player for functions, slides content, etc.

comment Unable to render file larger than 4 Gigs in Sony Vegas 10
This may be related. Look under limitations. Whether Vegas Pro uses this "File Sink" or not, I don't know. If it does than this is an inherent issue with Vegas Pro on Win 7 or earlier.

@filzilla Searching that site for mp4v yields no results.
