comment Keying Out Smoke Against a Black Background
Thats why I put it in qoutation marks. Every way that gets you there is a proper way. The screen blend mode is just the most common way to do it. You also have control over the outcome by using a level and or curve adjustment.

While this is a very good answer that will produce good results, the "proper" way would be to simply use the "screen" blend mode as mentioned by Justin Brunson in his answer. Its the standard way of dealing with any particle type stock footage on black background. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try the other ways mentioned here, not every footage is made for the screen blend mode.

True, I read it more as a question asking for an alternative tool. Not how exactly to do it.

What exactly is your issue? What do you expect to happen when the masks intersect? Are you masking one footage file with both masks at diffrent areas or does mask 2 and 3 have different footage that they are masking?

comment DirectShow frame grab from multiple hardware encoded H.264 streams over USB/PCI Express
This is a programming question for stackoverflow. If it gets moved over there I would give your question a try. A quick answer to you questions though. You will run very quickly into performance issues with your average desktop PC. Yes you can access more than one DirectShow devices at once, doesn't matter if its the same model, they just need to have a diffrent device ID number. Does it make sense? Not all that much as this will not work on all that many machines out there and only works with specific recording hardware.
