comment Is there a video type for vector animation?
Sounds like you should learn how to use the HTML5 canvas element.

comment Can you measure the width of a character in an AE expression?
No, I'm talking expressions. A lot of undocumented javascript creeps into expressions; for example many of the javascript string methods are there, like regex and so on.

comment How to Sync a Layer's Position, to a Layer in Another (Time Remapped) Comp
While the loopout expression is better, to use the value of the property at an arbitrary time you can use valueAtTime. This does what it says on the tin: myProperty.valueAtTime(t) returns the value of the property myProperty at the time t. Now the property you want is the position of the other layer, and the time you want is the value of the time remapping of the current layer (timeRemap), so in the expression above you'd use comp("Comp Name").layer("Layer Name").transform.position.valueAtTime(timeRemap)

comment The ideal wood for the DIY slate?
What about a tablet? Less romantic, but there are slate apps that do the job, and you can see them in the dark. Just for my information, what are you shooting on? Unless you're shooting film, then even if you're recording on a separate audio device you can use the on-camera sound as a synch track and automagically synch with software such as FCPX, Premiere or Pluraeyes. Otherwise, a good dense hardwood should be fine. The old wood slates I've used were plywood, with a hardwood strip along the jaws.

comment Should I cut footage into clips whilst I'm logging it?
It's been a while since I've had to digitise a tape, but the way you describe it is how I would work. One addition is that if your software supports it you can add markers or subclips while digitising so you can log as you ingest.

comment How much disk space does 1 mini DV tape digitised in HDV take?
Why would you bother to up-res DV to HDV? It will just waste a lot of space without any quality gain.

comment How to automate the rendering of all possible combinations of a composition in Adobe After Effects?
If you're editing in Premiere CC you could save the comp as a template and then edit the text values of the scores in Premier. helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/how-to/…
