comment h264 settings for large flat areas of slowly changing colour
Please include the complete ffmpeg console output. Can you provide a short input sample? Does reducing -crf to ~18 help? Does -tune animation make a difference? If nothing helps you can look into using the gradfun video filter upon playback.

comment Video Capture using ffmpeg (V4L2 indev) Results in Bad A/V Sync
What if you use one ffmpeg process to capture video and one for audio (start them at the same time) and then mux the resulting files? ffmpeg -i audio.wav -i video.mkv -c copy -shortest output.mkv

comment Video Capture using ffmpeg (V4L2 indev) Results in Bad A/V Sync
Try: ffmpeg -f alsa -i hw:1 -f v4l2 -i /dev/video0 -c:v libx264 -crf 0 -preset ultrafast -c:a copy lossless.mkv then re-encode it with ffmpeg -i lossless.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a libfdk_aac test.mp4 Does test.mp4 have better sync? What CPU are you using?

comment Video Capture using ffmpeg (V4L2 indev) Results in Bad A/V Sync
What player are you using? Does it seem like the sync is correct with ffplay? The option you referenced is meant to be used as an input option for the v4l2 input: -f v4l2 -ts abs -i /dev/video0 or -f v4l2 -ts mono2abs -i /dev/video0.

comment restart encoding with ffmpeg when bad source
You should include the first ~50 lines and the last ~50 lines of your ffmpeg console output if possible.

You need to include the complete ffmpeg console output. Without it we can only make guesses.

comment Set ipad compatible thumbs for mp4 videos based on a frame of the video with command line
Do you see any differences within the ffmpeg console output? ffmpeg -i works.mp4 -i notwork.mp4?

comment Set ipad compatible thumbs for mp4 videos based on a frame of the video with command line
What's the difference between the videos that do have a "working thumb" and ones that do not?

comment creating a lossless mp4 screencast
You can also use -crf 0 with 8-bit builds of x264. The only reason -qp is used instead is because 10-bit builds of x264 uses different values for -crf (I believe -crf -12 for 10-bit would be lossless) to achieve a similar visual quality.

comment How to re-encode a video file's audio, but leave the video stream with ffmpeg?
Note that if your input contains more than one video stream then only one will be stream copied by default. You can add -map 0:v to include all video streams or simply -map 0 to include all streams regardless of type (video, audio, subtitle, data, etc). See the documentation on stream selection for more info.
