I'm a robot, but you've probably never heard of me.

No - you can capture Quartz output with most screen recording tools, including UStream's broadcaster app. But I don't want Ustream's highly compressed video stream, I'd like higher quality output. A hardware solution is unnecessary.

comment Fair use with copyrighted material
This is best answered by a lawyer with music industry experience. The music industry is notoriously litigious. Just because your use falls within fair use doesn't mean you won't get hit with an expensive-to-defend lawsuit.

Encoders "cheat" on everything they possibly can. VLC itself probably uses the full 24 or 32 bit colorspace, but the video being played will most likely only be using a small subset of that space at any given time.

comment what hardware can I use to connect a Laserdisc player to my laptop?
The DVL-9 may have a high quality composite decoding system, so I wouldn't completely give up on S-Video. You won't really know until you try it, and S-Video input shouldn't increase your cost much.

comment RG6 vs RG59 HD-SDI cables for live stream
When considering costs, don't forget to consider the cost of testing out various solutions, replacing 'cheap' cable with better cable, etc. Also factor in the labor cost of running 900' of cable. Taken as a percentage of your total cost rather than an absolute value, the upgrade to better cable may be more palatable.

comment how accurate frequency does a PC speaker produce
Back in the '80s, there was a file floating around that, when executed, would speak "help, somebody! I'm trapped inside this computer" through the PC speaker.

Keep in mind that your built-in sound card probably generates audio at 44KHz. That means that a 22KHz sinewave will come out as a square wave. But it won't be that bad because your speaker can't move that fast, so it will be a somewhat rounded square wave. At 16KHz, you are still getting a much rougher approximation of a sine wave than you would at 1khz.

@filzilla I think you just invented the new Instagram for video...

yes - you really need to evaluate your situation to ensure that adding a copy protection scheme makes sense. At the end of the day, you are probably just putting money in Rovi's pocket and making life a bit harder for the people that produce your final output. There is also the small issue that music videos are usually intended to promote your band. You might need your head examined if you want to prevent people from seeing them!

Quartz is very much designed for audio visualizations - one of the default templates is for iTunes visualizations. The problem is that I haven't been able to find a Quartz host that will take a snapshot of the window hosting the quartz composition every 1/30 of a second and keep it in sync with the audio. I could probably fire up XCode and solve this problem myself, but I'm a bit surprised that people in the A/V world don't have a ready-made solution that works well.

I'm doubtful - screenflow records the entire screen at record time, and only lets you crop after the fact. That is a lot of bandwidth to keep up with.

That is what I'm already doing. The problem is that I can't find a way to record the video synchronized with the audio. The best I can do is screencapture tools intended for presentations, and that isn't good enough.

I completely agree that you should make a point of accepting good answers, but when you do so is a matter of personal preference. I don't ask a lot of questions, so often like to give a weak answer 5-7 days before I accept it. AVP's traffic is light, and people don't seem shy about adding late answers, so it may not be a big deal.

I'm curious why you accepted my answer rather than Josh's more detailed answer that includes a how-to article. I don't mind the reputation points, but it seems like the other answer better addresses your question.

I think the question is fine for SU, ASE and AVP, but slightly better for ASE than AVP. I suspect the OP would get better answers on ASE than here. Moderation is a community effort here, and I'm happy (and I hope others are too) to hear from anyone who is interested in making sure that AVP (and ASE and SU) is excellent for its stated purpose.
