Functional programming enthusiast, audio engineer & musician. Whilst not busy with any of that, I study physics at Universität zu Köln / Bonn-Cologne Graduate School.

comment What Happens to Frequencies Above the Nyquist Limit?
Note that this wouldn't happen in a properly designed system – good ADCs and nonlinear digital effects include bandlimiting precautions, so if you "try" to produce frequencies higher than Nyqvist you only get silence there.

comment Color temperature
Perhaps you could clarify this – you might have used the words "warm" and "cold" in two opposite meanings here, or at least said it in a way that might confuse people. Warm light, the yellowish kind characteristic for old incandescend bulbs, has in fact a lower color temperature than blueish, "cold" light from e.g. fluorescent tubes. — Also, I don't quite agree about using light sources of different temperature in the same scene; this can be used as an effect but usually just makes either of the objects look strange.

comment How could an 8-bit encoding take more memory than a 10-bit encoding?
That's surely just not true in general, but it might hold for certain codecs. You'll need to be a bit more specific.

comment Are there any mathematical advantages for higher sampling rates?
All professional audio software works with 32 or 64 bit floating-point internally during the mix, regardless of the bit depth used during recording.

comment Windows 7 - multiple programs with conflicting sound output
Again, what kind of driver does Ableton use? There are a couple of possibilities, like DirectSound or ASIO4All, which work quite differently in such regards.

comment Windows 7 - multiple programs with conflicting sound output
What audio devices do you use, and with what driver? You bet it's quite intentional that programs other than your DAW aren't granted access, so there won't be any conflicts over e.g. sample rate. — There are specialised frameworks for bringing the audio from different programs together, perhaps most notably ReWire. You won't be able to use this with programs that aren't professional audio applications, though.

comment Should I just get a gaming PC for audio/video production?
Graphics processors currently are of no relevance at all in audio production; in video production they are primarily used to run codecs on, but for that a really high-end graphics card isn't much better than an average one. However, things might well change in the future – as technologies such as CUDA and OpenCL become more popular, more video and perhaps also audio software will use them. In some cases, this might greatly boost performance.

comment how can I smoothly move a camera without a dolly?
To nitpick, it's actually not so much stabilised by gravity as by moment of inertia.

comment Difference Matte Keying software
Yes, but that's not the same thing. Difference blending just combines two images, while difference matte uses one image to create a mask for another one through which it can then be combined with a third image.

You don't have to convert your computer, it's no problem to install a Linux parallel to Windows (assuming that's what you're using now). Do it, it's worth the effort! — Cinelerra might even run under Windows with Cygwin, though getting that to work tends to be rather difficult. — I don't mind if you don't accept this answer, but you should add something about the operating system to the question body, especially since you write "free software" there, which at least to me suggests a preference for Linux.

comment Adding voiceover without video recompression
It's correct that a new file needs to be created, but that doesn't tell anything about recompression, which indeed can be avoided for the non-modified track.

comment Options to speed up Hobbyist Rendering?
Better CPUs? You could be more specific on what kind of stuff you actually want to render, but for the tasks they can do at all GPUs are obviously more effective.

comment Removing horizontal scan lines from video?
I wouldn't describe those as lines. Looks like a sync issue with your lighting, do you use fluorescent lamps?

Could you show an example of how these lines actually look?
